    Developing consumer-based service brand equity via the internet: The role of personalization and trialability

    The commercialization of the Internet has provided opportunities for building service brands in the minds of consumers. Services are characterized as intangible, heterogeneous, inseparable, and perishable features that often engender high information costs and, hence, low perceived value to potential consumers. When a service is available via the Interneta medium that can subdivide and rebuild the service into personalized offeringspotential consumers become better informed in advance of what the service provides. The Internet also permits most services to be trialable before consumption. These new features, empowered by the Internet, have important implications for what we call consumer-based service brand equity (CSBE), the value that potential consumers assign to a service brand. This article investigates the effects of service personalization and trialability on the development of CSBE of Internet banking service, a typical service available via the Internet. Results from a laboratory experiment indicate that both service personalization and trialability have significant positive influences on the development of the CSBE of an Internet banking service brand. While personalization was found to indirectly influence CSBE development by mediating the perceived benefits of the brand, trialability exerted both a direct and an indirect effect. Trialability developed the brand's CSBE by first mediating the information through gathering cost savings and then the perceived benefits of the brand.     An empirical investigation of the determinants of user acceptance of Internet banking

    The growth in the use of the Internet as a distribution channel of products and services offered by various businesses has been phenomenal. One such application is Internet banking services. As more and more financial institutions are finding ways to utilize Internet technologies to launch Internet banking services, an important issue is to understand what factors will impact the decisions of customers in adopting the service. Based on Davis's technology acceptance model with 4 additional variables that are theoretically justified as having influence on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, a research model for the investigated technology acceptance was developed and empirically examined, using responses from more than 160 intended users of the technology. Results of the data analysis generally support the model as well as 7 of 8 of the proposed hypotheses. In particular, personalization, alliance services, task familiarity, and accessibility were found to have significant influence on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, which, in turn, were found to be important factors in fostering a positive attitude toward accepting the services.     Impact of information presentation modes on online shopping: An empirical evaluation of a broadband interactive shopping service

    With the increasing cost-effectiveness of communication technologies, online shopping has emerged as one of the most important areas of electronic commerce. A major problem facing online shopping service providers is the heterogeneity of user profile. Unlike organizational systems that have a well-defined universe of users and system boundary, these shopping services are designed for public users with very different cognitive and demographic profiles. The major challenge lies in designing friendly and effective user interfaces for online shoppers. Previous studies on online shopping suggest that a good user interface with an appropriate mode of information presentation is the key to system acceptance. In this article, we report on an empirical study that looks at product information presentation modes in an actual broadband supermarket shopping environment. Four prototypes with different combinations of text and picture displays were developed and evaluated in an experimental setting. The findings suggest that there is a close relation between product familiarity and shopping effectiveness. When the system is used to purchase familiar product items, pictures are better than text in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness. However, when users are not familiar with the product items, the advantages of pictures over text diminish.     Adoption of telemedicine technology by health care organizations: An exploratory study

    Recent advances in information and biomedicine technology have significantly increased the technical feasibility, clinical viability, and economic affordability of telemedicine-enabled service collaboration and delivery. Health care organizations around the world have become increasingly interested in acquiring and implementing telemedicine technology to improve or extend existing patient care and services. The ultimate success of telemedicine in an adopting organization requires adequate attention to both technological and managerial issues. This study examined organizational technology adoption, an essential management issue facing many health care organizations interested in or currently evaluating telemedicine. On the basis of a framework proposed by Tornatzky and Fleischer [1], we developed a research model for targeted technology adoption and empirically evaluated it in a survey study that involved most of the public health care organizations in Hong Kong. Results from our exploratory study suggest that the model exhibits reasonable significance and explanatory utility to differentiate between adopting and nonadopting organizations. Specifically, the collective attitude of medical staff and perceived service risks were found to be significant determinants of targeted technology adoption.     Predictors and Consequences of In-hospital Formula Supplementation for Healthy Breastfeeding Newborns

    BACKGROUND: Although exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months, the use of breast milk substitutes is widespread around the world. OBJECTIVES: To describe the patterns of infant formula supplementation among healthy breastfeeding newborns, to identify factors contributing to in-hospital formula supplementation, and to assess the dose-response relationship between the amount of in-hospital formula supplementation and the duration of any breastfeeding. METHODS: A sample of 1246 breastfeeding mother-infant pairs was recruited from 4 public hospitals in Hong Kong and followed prospectively for 12 months or until weaned. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine factors associated with in-hospital supplementation. Cox regression analysis was used to explore the impact of in-hospital supplementation on breastfeeding duration. RESULTS: Of the total, 82.5% of newborns were supplemented in the hospital; one-half received formula within 5 hours of birth. Assisted vaginal delivery (odds ratio [OR] = 2.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03, 4.15), cesarean section (OR = 3.45, 95% CI 1.75, 6.80), and higher birth weight (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.12, 2.18) were positively associated with in-hospital formula supplementation, whereas initiating breastfeeding in the delivery room (OR = 0.55, 95% CI 0.33, 0.89) was associated with decreased likelihood of in-hospital supplementation. Any infant formula in the first 48 hours was associated with a shorter duration of breastfeeding (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.51, 95% CI 1.27, 1.80), but there was no dose-response effect. CONCLUSION: In-hospital formula supplementation is common in Hong Kong hospitals and appears to be detrimental to breastfeeding duration. Continued efforts should be made to avoid the provision of infant formula to breastfeeding babies while in the hospital unless medically indicated.postprin

    Mapping adaptive particle filters to heterogeneous reconfigurable systems

    This article presents an approach for mapping real-time applications based on particle filters (PFs) to heterogeneous reconfigurable systems, which typically consist of multiple FPGAs and CPUs. A method is proposed to adapt the number of particles dynamically and to utilise runtime reconfigurability of FPGAs for reduced power and energy consumption. A data compression scheme is employed to reduce communication overhead between FPGAs and CPUs. A mobile robot localisation and tracking application is developed to illustrate our approach. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptive PF can reduce up to 99% of computation time. Using runtime reconfiguration, we achieve a 25% to 34% reduction in idle power. A 1U system with four FPGAs is up to 169 times faster than a single-core CPU and 41 times faster than a 1U CPU server with 12 cores. It is also estimated to be 3 times faster than a system with four GPUs

Para além das formas convencionais de envolvimento dos stokholders, novas formas de cooperação precisam de ser exploradas. O presente artigo tem por obectivo reflectir sobre a melhor estratégia de gestão a aplicar nos actores-chave num contexto de networking sobre construção sustentável em Portugal. A análise efectuada permitiu verificar que o sucesso de uma plataforma de cooperação está condicionada pela participação dos actores-chave, pelo que há necessidade de fazer o mapeamento, a hierarquização e a definição de uma estratégia de gestão que maximize asua cooperação, isto é, que vá ao encontro das necessidades de cada um deles, para que a plataforma de cooperação se torne um efectivo espaço de partilha, diálogo, aprendizagem e inovação

    Evaluation of a biometric keystroke typing dynamics computer security system.

    This study evaluates an inexpensive personal computer access control system that relies on biometric keystroke typing dynamics technology, BioPassword Model 2100 (BioPassword). Enrollment time, verification time, false rejection error rate, false acceptance error rate, and user acceptance were evaluated for this system. The results show that BioPassword provides multilayer security through the inclusion of privilege control, audit functions, passwords, and verification of a personal behavioral characteristic, the rate and variation of typing a given password string. Enrollment and verification times were considered satisfactorily fast. Overall false rejection error rate was 22.5%, while false acceptance error rate was 3.4%. The false rejection error rate for acceptance as a function of trial number from one trial to five trials were 4. 4%, 1.4%, O.7%, O.4%, andO.3% respectively. These values were achieved under relatively uncontrolled conditions and should be improved on by using recommendations that are included. Users generally reported satisfaction with the system, which should be acceptable as part of an office automation system when used in conjunction with other standard security measures.
